Process for Abstract Expressionism Painting

Once I finished my practice, I started on my large abstract expressionism painting. I started with a red and yellow wash. I then made marks with the same color, starting out with a fiery theme.

Once that was done, I flipped my canvas and continued with my red and yellow theme to create more marks and fill it up.

Once that was done, I wanted to add blue to diversify my color scheme. At first the layers weren't as well mixed, and it was easy to see the different color layers, so I added red on top and more blue to create a more mixed look. I also used multiple techniques when painting, like adding colors with the palette knife instead of the brush, and making swirls with only the tips of the bristles.
