Process for Abstract Expressionism Painting

Once I finished my practice, I started on my large abstract expressionism painting. I started with a red and yellow wash. I then made marks with the same color, starting out with a fiery theme.

Once that was done, I flipped my canvas and continued with my red and yellow theme to create more marks and fill it up.

I created these marks with flowers in mind, but then someone said it reminded them of fireworks, so I considered that too.

Once that was done, I wanted to add blue to diversify my color scheme. At first the layers weren't as well mixed, and it was easy to see the different color layers, so I added red on top and more blue to create a more mixed look. I also used multiple techniques when painting, like adding colors with the palette knife instead of the brush, and making swirls with only the tips of the bristles.

My final painting! My favorite part is the swirls and they remind me of ripples on a lake.
